Hazardous Materials Labeling

Some words and phrases have special meanings when talking about hazardous materials. Some of these may differ from the meanings you are used to. The words and phrases found in this section may appear on your test. The meanings of other important words are in the glossary at the end of Section 9.

The hazard class of a material reflects the risks that are associated with it. There are nine different hazard classes. The types of materials included in these nine classes are listed in the table below. See Figure 9.1.

A shipping paper describes the hazardous materials being transported. Shipping orders, bills of lading, and cargo manifests make up all shipping documentation. Figure 9-6 shows an example of a shipping paper.

Shippers put diamond-shaped warning labels on most hazardous materials packages. These labels inform others of the hazard. If the diamond-shaped label does not fit on the package, shippers can put the label on a flag securely attached to the package. For example, compressed gas cylinders that do not have a label must have flags or decals. The labels look like the example in Figure 9-2.

The Hazardous Materials function is configured in Product Information Management and provides documents that can be printed through Warehouse Management. So, generally speaking, those areas are the two main areas where you will review, configure and use the functionality of this feature:

Product Information Management provides various configuration tables where you can enter reference information for dangerous goods lists for road, air and sea transport.

When you prepare a shipment in Warehouse Management, you can print several new reports that use the information you set up in Product Information Management. For more information on the available reports and how to use them, see Hazardous materials queries and reports.
